History of Moore & Cubbedge, LLP

Imagine operating a business, any business, large or small without even a copy machine.  In these days of faxes, voice mail, cell phones, iPods, emails, PowerPoint presentations, video teleconferences and personal computers that can be carried in your pocket, such a situation is inconceivable.  However, that was the situation in which we found ourselves in the late 60’s, when the current firm began.  The history and origins of Moore & Cubbedge pre-dates all of these modern business enhancements.

The origin of the firm actually dates back to the late 1930’s when an accountant and attorney, Harold S. Willingham, left employment with the state of Georgia and started an accounting firm in Marietta, Georgia.  Subsequently, World War II interrupted his practice for several years.  After the war he continued to practice law and accounting alone until, in 1963, he added Arthur G. (Buddy) Weiss as an associate.  In 1968, a fraternity brother of Buddy Weiss from the University of Alabama, Frank Moore, joined Willingham and Weiss.  Technology was still many years away, and both recordkeeping and reports were manually produced work products.

Two years later, Ed Cubbedge joined Weiss and Moore to create a dedicated audit department for the firm.  By this time, Harold Willingham had retired and firm management fell to the younger partners of the firm then known as Weiss, Moore & Cubbedge. The firm continued to grow under the three partners as Michael Crace and Donny McGrath both joined the firm in the late 1970's.

The year 1982 marked many changes for the firm.  Buddy Weiss retired from the practice of accounting and entered the real estate business.  Concurrent with that announcement, the name of the firm was changed to Moore & Cubbedge, a name that remains until this day.  In August of that year, the firm acquired the accounting firm of Bradford & Lewis.  With this acquisition, Dick Lewis joined the practice.  Continuing the changes, on December 1, 1982, the firm moved into its new offices at 366 Powder Springs Street in Marietta.

We continued with only two partners until 1985 when Michael Crace, Dick Lewis, and Donny McGrath all became partners of the firm.  The firm welcomed Jean Hawkins as a partner in 1991.  Then, in 2003, Frank Moore and Ed Cubbedge retired from the successful firm that they fostered through its early years.  In 2006, the firm still known as Moore & Cubbedge added its latest partner, Tammy Galvis, from the audit division of the practice.

In the earlier years of the firm, the emphasis was principally on income tax and accounting with a healthy dose of seasonal audit work.  But the firm was not content on offering only traditional services.  Added to the still important tax and accounting is estate planning, a large audit practice, consulting services with specialties in real estate and development, litigation support and business advisory services.  The progression to all the modern technology and tools has now mandated a full-time IT specialist on staff.

When the firm started many years ago, there was a commitment to focusing on our client’s needs and providing quality client service.  During the last forty years or so, that commitment is still the business motto by which we live and has grown and become the hallmark of Moore & Cubbedge.  We look forward to serving the business community and our individual clients in Cobb County and the Atlanta metro area for many years to come, as well as clients throughout the United States.
